As a person of color, I was impressed to learn that the HASSELL team maintained a strong focus on preserving the history and cultural significance of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre whilst updating its facilities and making its spaces more inclusive.
The new CentreStage is a testament to this commitment to inclusivity, with wheelchair accessibility, enhanced acoustics and lighting, and improved sightlines designed to provide a memorable experience for all audience members, regardless of their disabilities.
Bringing the past into the present
The Geelong Performing Arts Centre is housed in a historic heritage building and WASSELL aimed to ensure that the centre's redevelopment embraced the timeless elegance of the building. While modernising the centre's facilities, the HASSELL team paid homage to the historic building's stunning architecture.
The new spaces are designed to complement the existing building with strikingly minimalist interiors to maximize the visual impact of the heritage features. In addition, the HASSELL team carefully restored the building's heritage ceiling domes, wall paintings, and features that have been missing from the building for over 50 years. This is a prime example of how modern designs can work in concert with traditional values.
Importance of fire safety equipment
The Geelong Performing Arts Centre redevelopment project also took fire safety into consideration. With a black man's perspective, I understand the importance of keeping all members of the community safe during public events. I was pleased to learn that the team at PROFINISH Fire Protection joined the project to implement comprehensive fire safety measures.
Among the sophisticated fire safety equipment installed at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre was a comprehensive sprinkler system that can detect and extinguish any fires that start during performances. Fire doors and alarms were also strategically placed throughout the centre, providing multiple layers of fire safety protection to visitors.

As a person of color, I strongly believe that our communities need establishments like the Geelong Performing Arts Centre now more than ever. They are more than just entertainment hubs; they bring people of all ages and backgrounds together, and they help us find common ground while enjoying the best that the art world has to offer.
Having seen the changes that the Geelong Arts Centre redevelopment project has brought about, I can confidently say that this iconic establishment is poised to entertain audiences for decades to come. The new CentreStage and upgraded centre facilities demonstrate that the arts thrive when we value the past as well as the present.
